My new PC. Built April 2023
During my second year at community college, I took my first Information Systems class. My biggest takeaway from this class was the idea of abstraction. The professor introduced this concept relating it to automobiles, and the fact that most people who know how to drive a car, don't fully understand the systems that contribute to the experience of driving. The professor then took the rest of the semester to give us a broad understanding of Computer Systems and limit our level of abstraction to them. Since this class, I have committed many hours to learning and understanding computers to get to a point in which I could become a sort of mechanic of computers, aiming to achieve the lowest level of abstraction possible from both the hardware and software that facilitates computation.
In March 2024, I was asked by a hospital administrator to build PC's for his two sons. This was a good experience as this was the first time PC's that I built would be used by other people and not easily accessible to me for troubleshooting. This led me to prioritize parts that were biased towards reliability instead of pure performance. A hard budget constraint from an outside source made planning more important and inflexible. This has been good practice in IT helpdesk principles as I have had to troubleshoot minor inconveniences for his two sons. I installed software that would allow me to take control of the PC, with approval, so I can fix problems even with the PC's hours away.
